Summary

This position is located at the Fayetteville VA Medical Center in Fayetteville - NC. The Pharmacy Technician performs varied technical duties in the Inpatient and/or Outpatient Pharmacy under the direction of the supervisor or staff pharmacist. Technical duties include processing and preparing prescriptions - operating and maintaining automated dispensing devices and equipment - and having the knowledge of and the ability to perform pharmaceutical operations using aseptic techniques.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

• Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States

• English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy Technician candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f)
• May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria)
• Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements - applicants must have one year of experience equivalent to the next lower GS-05 level - and demonstrate the following Knowledge - Skills and Abilities (KSAs): (a) Knowledge of Federal and state laws related to pharmacy practice
• (b) Knowledge of preparation - storage and distribution of medication products including those requiring special handling and documentation
• (c) Ability to use pharmacy information systems or operate pharmacy dispensing equipment
• (d) Knowledge of basic inventory procedures
• (e) Ability to communicate with patients and staff and direct questions to appropriate personnel

• Pharmacy technicians at the GS-06 full performance level may fill orders - dispense/deliver medications using automated systems or provide technical customer service to Veterans related to prescription needs
• Duties will include delivery of medications to floors/patients - filling medications for the pharmacist to review - checking for expired medications - answering phones with appropriate disposition - preparing sterile products (when applicable) and assisting with basic inventory management such as putting up stock and identifying when medications need to be ordered
• Preferred Experience: Experience working in a Hospital pharmacy

• The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6. Physical Requirements: Physical demands of the position requires regular and recurring physical exertion - involving standing for prolonged periods of time - bending and stooping - lifting/carrying of pharmaceutical supplies weighing up to 40 lbs - pushing and pulling of large carts

Duties

• The Pharmacy Technician performs varied technical duties in the Inpatient and/or Outpatient Pharmacy under the direction of the supervisor or staff pharmacist
• Technical duties consist of - but are not limited to processing and preparing for processing prescriptions by counting - mixing - pouring - combining - or obtaining necessary medications and pharmaceutical products
• In addition - will operate - care - and maintain automated dispensing devices and equipment - as well as have knowledge of - and the ability to perform pharmaceutical operations using aseptic techniques - receiving shipments of goods - assuring compliance with storage requirements - and inventory control through perpetual analysis
• The employee arranges the timing and sequence of assigned task to meet variable workload demands and time schedules as set by Pharmacy/Hospital policies
• All work on prescription/medication orders and intravenous solutions is checked by a pharmacist
• other work is reviewed for overall accuracy of results
• The employee will rotate among various sections within the Fayetteville VA Medical Center (FVAMC) Pharmacy Service - as determined by scheduling and workload requirements - performing duties as assigned in order to provide technician coverage on all operating shifts
• This position requires basic computer knowledge and familiarity with the use of the computer systems
• The pharmacy technician assists the pharmacist in providing optimal pharmaceutical care and timely customer service in accordance with the mission - vision and goals of the FVAMC
• Work Schedule: Monday-Friday - 7:00a-9:00p variable shifts Compressed/Flexible: Available Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases When setting pay - a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade)
